About The Film

2026 - 85mins - Canada/Iceland

In rural Iceland, news cameraman Simon Thomasson is found dead at the edge of a cliff in a deliberately staged scene. Soon after, his reporting partner, Lára Oddný Steinunnar-Tjörvadóttir, disappears. The investigation stalls, but competing criminal, personal and supernatural theories keep the case alive in the public imagination.Years later, a documentary crew returns to reconstruct Lára and Simon’s final days. Travelling through remote communities and revisiting those connected to the original investigation, the crew uncovers new material that challenges the accepted timeline. What begins as a review of a cold case becomes an active search for answers.Drawing on Icelandic folklore without offering easy explanations, Á Huldu: The Hidden Ones combines true-crime investigation with Nordic-noir atmosphere. As past and present begin to overlap, the film moves beyond interviews and official records toward images and evidence not seen before, drawing the audience in as a particpant.Á Huldu: The Hidden Ones is an English and Icelandic language true-crime documentary-style mystery for international audiences.Directed by Darren Borrowman; produced by Gudni Pall Saemundsson, Darren Borrowman and Tom Belding.

The Hidden Ones Podcast

Late one night, executive producer Diane Lynch stumbled across the Afhjúpa Tumblr blog - a fragmented archive of news articles and broadcasts surrounding an Icelandic cold case.

Curious, she took the story to Reddit, where her questions and conversation drew replies that were guarded, contradictory and often left her asking more questions than finding answers.

What began as online curiosity became an investigation, and soon she launched The Hidden Ones Podcast - an audio investigation that reopens the cold case of Simon Thomasson and the disappearance of Lára Oddný Steinunnar-Tjörvadóttir.Across three episodes, Diane introduces the evidence, the unanswered questions, and the uneasy space where fact ends and folklore begins.Listen & Watch now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and Youtube.

The podcast ends where the investigation truly begins. With the rumours mapped and the unanswered questions multiplying, Diane Lynch takes The Hidden Ones beyond the studio and returns to Iceland with a documentary crew.
The film follows the case into the landscapes, locations, and uneasy discoveries that audio alone could never reveal—where old evidence resurfaces, new connections emerge, and the story begins to push back.
